Why homeschool?

There are many, many reasons families decide to homeschool. And most families start homeschooling for one or more reasons and continue on the course for completely different reasons.

The most life-changing reason to homeschool, and the one that Grandparents of Homeschoolers encourages, is the opportunity and perfect environment for the discipleship of children. Because education IS discipleship. There’s more. Here’s what Jesus said about education:

“A pupil is not above his teacher; but everyone, after he has been fully trained, will be like his teacher.” — Luke 6:40

So it is crucially important WHO is doing the discipling. Because our grandkids will become “like them”! What a blessing for our grandchildren to be taught, molded and mentored in everything by their parents, with additional involvement from us, their grandparents!

With homeschooling becoming increasingly popular and desirable as the years go on, the general population will continue to choose home education for a wide variety of reasons. It is our prayer that once in the thick of it, they will discover the joys and blessings of Christ-centered, independent, parent-directed home education, with grandparents playing important roles, whether we live nearby or far away.

Here are some of the reasons families initially choose to homeschool:

— Small class size enables individual instruction

— Flexible schedule

— Each child can learn at his or her own speed

— Education can be tailored to each child’s interests and skills

— Can’t afford private schools. Many homeschooling families started homeschooling for this reason and then soon realized that they loved it and would continue homeschooling even if private school were free.

— Family unit grows closer because of so much time spent together. And that includes grandparents!

— Efficient use of time. It takes surprisingly little time to homeschool, compared to the time it takes to accomplish the same amount of learning in a traditional school.

— Safety (safety from drugs, assaults, dangerous peer pressure, sexual predators, theft, etc.)

— Children are out and about, experiencing “real life”  and interacting with people of all ages each day, as opposed to sitting in a classroom with the same 20 or 30 children of the same age every day.

— Real learning takes place when students are not “taught to the test.”

— The family’s religious convictions will be taught and honored through home education.

— Socialization! (We’ll have more about that later on this website. But if you want your grandchildren to be socially adept with people of all ages, races, income levels, educational degrees, professions, etc., then make sure your kids homeschool your grandkids!)

— Ideology. We grandparents weren’t force-fed political and social indoctrination when we attended public school, but today’s children are. The best way to pass our values, morals and worldview on to the generations who will be our legacy is for the parents to homeschool them.

— It’s the only way to truly accomplish God’s command in Deut. 6:5-9, because that requires that parents are with their children all the time: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be as frontals on your forehead. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.”
